For years I had trouble figuring out what Apples business really is. A couple of years ago I decided that they are more fashion company than technology. When you evaluate their behavior and fundamentals this way it becomes a lot less confusing. However, I've recently modified my opinion slightly. I ordered the Philips HUE remote controlled led lightbulb starter kit from them (they're the exclusive bricks-and-mortar retailer in the US right now), with the pick-up-in-store option. The experience of picking up my purchase was astounding. Not enough for me to change to Apple products, but it helped me understand their business. I walked in, and despite the store being packed with hipster customers, there were still a gaggle of employees eager to help. When I informed them I was there for an online order pickup, one of them scanned my credit card, tapped on his iPhone, then stood there and chatted with me while someone in the stock room found my order and brought it out.
What's the point? Apple is a tech accessibility firm. Their model is to make tech easy and attractive to ludites and technophobes. Lets face it, the describes the overwhelming majority of Earth's population. I've never used Apple iOS, but if the experience is anything like the purchase experience, I fully understand why the average consumer would be drawn to it.
That being said, most Apple customers are going to (appropriately) blame those who'd take advantage of security vulnerabilities. Should they be more aware? sure. Are they going to? If the entire history of networked computing is any example, probably not.
I certainly don't mean that ONLY technophobes prefer Apple products. Quite the opposite. I simply suggest that it's tough for a technophobe to prefer Android. Anyone who just wants their device to work in the obvious ways is probably better off with iOS. That includes people who work with tech all day and don't want to be bothered with it when they go home.
